Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the 2024 University of Edinburgh MasterCard Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Academic Background: Candidates should meet the academic requirements for admission to an eligible postgraduate program at the University of Edinburgh. Generally, this requires a UK Second Class Upper Bachelor’s degree (Hons) or higher. Interested applicants can find specific entry requirements for their country on the university’s website.

2. Significant Barriers: Applicants must have faced substantial barriers to education. This can include challenges that are social, financial, personal, practical, or health-related. 

3. Graduation Timeline: All applicants must have completed their undergraduate studies and hold a degree certificate along with an official final transcript by September 2024. These documents must be submitted by December 7, 2024. 

4. Residency: Applicants should be residents or citizens of a Sub-Saharan African country or hold refugee status in the region. 

5. Leadership Experience: A demonstrated history of leadership and community service is essential. 

6. Commitment to Climate Action: Candidates are expected to showcase either prior experience or ambitions to address the climate crisis effectively. 

7. Age Limit: Applicants must be 35 years old or younger as of September 1, 2025. 

8. Previous Degrees: This scholarship is intended for those who have not already completed a postgraduate degree. Additionally, candidates should not be enrolled in another university while receiving the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship. 

The program particularly encourages applications from female scholars, individuals from refugee or displaced backgrounds, and those with disabilities. 

Scholarship Duration and Benefits

The scholarship encompasses a full package of support for successful applicants, including:

  • Complete tuition coverage for the postgraduate course 
  • Accommodation during the study period 
  • A monthly living stipend to cover day-to-day expenses 
  • Travel allowances 
  • Study materials, including a laptop
